This course has been designed for those working under supervision in confined spaces. It teaches participants how to identify confined space hazards, work safely within confined spaces according to an issued permit, and operate various confined space safety equipment.

This course allows workers to perform basic risk assessments and enter a confined space to conduct work under an issued permit under the supervision of a qualified stand-by person. Students will also be required to carry out user inspections of all equipment and training in the safe use of gas detectors including bump testing.

NB: This course does not train or assess competency in breathing apparatus.

Objectives and Content

Understanding of confined space legislation and standards
How to perform risk assessments and control measures
Tagging and lock out
Confined space permits
Basic understanding of atmospheric monitoring
Confined space entry equipment – tripods, davits, RPDs, personal winches, retrieval SRLs, spreader bars and full body harnesses
Demonstrate confined space entry, work positioning and rescue techniques
Cleaning up work area

Entry Requirements

Participants must:

Have the physical fitness to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstrations for this course, such as undertaking the requirements to safely enter, work in, and exit a confined space wearing the appropriate PPE.
Have sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete the course.
